Arizona families eligible for workers’ comp after work accidents
Luckily, on-the-job injuries at Arizona worksites are often minor. Even workers who are seriously injured are usually able to get the medical care or workers’ compensation benefits they need in order to recuperate and get back on the job. Tragically, though, some work accidents are fatal.
In another state, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration only recently closed an investigation into just such a fatal workplace accident. The incident occurred at an electrical cable manufacturing company, Gulf Cable LLC. Toward the end of Nov. 2016, a worker was crushed to death after being pulled into a re-spool machine when he was attempting to guide electrical wiring cable into the apparatus.
OSHA began its investigation directly after the 26-year-old worker’s death. A total of 12 citations have since been issued to the company for multiple safety violations, including one willful violation, one repeat violation and seven serious violations. The machine that caused the man’s death apparently lacked the required guarding which could have prevented the worker from coming into contact with its moving parts. OSHA also cited the employer for a repeat violation for failure to develop or use emergency procedures to prevent machines from operating during employee service and maintenance.
The agency has proposed fines totaling $226, 431. While these citations and fines will hopefully spur the company to improve safety procedures and protocols in the future, they do nothing to bring back the deceased worker. Grieving Arizona families who have lost loved ones to work accidents may benefit from consulting a workers’ compensation attorney, who can help them pursue full benefits to aid in alleviating the financial strain that often follows such a tragic loss.
